Naturism FAQ - All the questions you've always wanted to ask but never dared! FEN answers:

What is the difference between naturism and nudism?

Nudism is limited to being naked, often in the context of swimming or at the beach. Naturism, on the other hand, is considered a way of life based on respect, nature, health and bodily harmony. It includes nudity, but goes far beyond a simple physical state.

What are the values of naturism?

The fundamental and main values are:

  • respect for oneself and others,
  • acceptance of the body: one's own and that of others
  • return to nature,
  • tolerance and kindness,
  • simplicity and balance.

These values structure the spirit of all FEN naturist areas.

What will naturism bring me?

Naturism brings:

  • greater self-esteem,
  • an undeniable feeling of freedom,
  • less stress,
  • physical and mental well-being,
  • a more authentic relationship with others,
  • a close connection with nature.

For many, it is a form of gentle therapy.

Do you have to be naked all the time?

Nudity is the norm in designated areas, particularly around swimming pools and outdoor activities. Certain situations (cold weather, restaurants, travel, specific activities) may require you to cover up. Each FEN resort sets out its rules in a simple manner. However, don't forget that the reason for choosing a naturist holiday is to be naked as often as possible.

Is naturism also for children and teenagers?

Yes. Naturism is family-oriented by nature. Children grow up in a healthy, caring, non-sexualised environment where respect for the body is natural. Teenagers benefit from an environment that promotes acceptance and self-confidence, and all FEN establishments show genuine tolerance towards teenagers.

Do I need a naturist licence?

In most FEN naturist campsites and holiday villages, no licence is required. It is useful for accessing certain clubs, activities or local associations, but is not generally required for a stay at a naturist campsite. However, by purchasing your licence from the French Naturist Federation, you are supporting an association responsible for promoting and defending the naturist movement through numerous regional associations and clubs, trade fairs and conferences.

As a single person, can I visit a naturist centre?

Some campsites accept single people, but they are very often asked to present a naturist licence or be sponsored. It is essential to check before visiting if you are single.

Will I feel comfortable despite the marks that life has left on my body?

Absolutely. More than anywhere else, naturism is one of the few environments where the real body is valued. Scars, wrinkles, curves: these are all part of life. Naturist campsites are places where there are no complexes and where appearance is irrelevant.

What about piercings and other body modifications?

Piercings, tattoos and body modifications are generally accepted as long as they do not disturb others and are not sexualised.

What should I do to convince my partner to try the experience?

Explain the values of naturism, reassure your partner about the family-friendly and respectful atmosphere, show them examples of naturist resorts, and suggest a discovery day or a short stay. The key is to never force the issue, but to let their curiosity grow.

What are the origins of naturism in France?

Modern naturism in France emerged at the beginning of the 20th century when hygienist medicine was developing. The 1930s and the Popular Front accelerated the movement, particularly with the introduction of paid holidays in 1936, which made it possible to combine health and leisure. In Gironde, in the Médoc region, the CHM Montalivet was created in 1950, the first official naturist centre in the world. The 1960s and 1970s saw the peak of naturism's development in France, with numerous centres, clubs and beaches opening up across the country.

Naturism: what does French law say?

Naturism is perfectly legal in France, provided it is practised in appropriate places or in a context that does not disturb public order.

Contrary to popular belief, nudity is not prohibited per se by French law.

What does the Penal Code actually say?

No law prohibits simple nudity.

What is prohibited is sexual exhibitionism (Article 222-32 of the Penal Code).

Important: naturist nudity is not sexual. It is therefore not considered sexual exhibitionism when practised in an appropriate context.
